Well, I just polished off the 8th and most up to date Detective Conan Movie
It made me cry...It made me cry to think I'll never get to see a US release, even with crappy dubbing.
I'll be called Case Close: Insert Crappy Title here... and the name..no more Shinichi...it'll be Jimmy or whatever Viz decided to butcher his name as.
I fucking hate Viz now...I hate them with all my being. They take good anime and manga, and butcher it. A bad translation is nothing compared to Title changes, name changes and sound FX changes (artwork changes). I watched some horrible translation on these movies and that wasn't as horrible as such edits.
I wish I could send a letter to Viz and actually get them to listen, get them to change all this around and redo all the bad and make it good. Say they got the fans wrong and are agoing to change all their series' back to their original with the artwork intact.
I know it's stupid to get emotional over such things, but this kind of censorship shouldn't be tolerated. Yeah it's just an anime and that fansubs are good to have, but it's all the other people out there calling it Case Closed and calling the main character Jimmy or whatever. I thought Viz of all people would keep the names in the manga.
That's another frustration, people telling me to "go get the Japanese version if I don't like the US version" it's the frustration of not knowing that much Japanese, and not being able to just go to sleep and wake up knowing it. I stare at my Microman manga and there is that dull hurt inside that I don't really know what's being said. Thus having and accurate traslation is like a light of happiness.
I was hoping that Tokyo Pop would have seen the light and snatched up the rights first, a bad translation with everything else intact is far better than having a good traslation with nothing reconizeable intact.

for one, you need to presuade people to become translators.
or is it hard? it apperas there are lots of good ones, but the're "busy" translating ROMs, because they aren't being hired by places.

maybye Viz has a thing aginst competent transations? like...um...things would appeal more to the wider market.

there is a case closed though, it looks like it was on Cartoon network, is it the same show? your entry makes things look like they were outdated.

who changed artwork in what show/manga? petshop of horrors is uh....translated by Tokyo Pop, how differnt are the versions?
the sailor moon manga was traslaed by MiXX...the names aren't the orginal but then again, it would be hard to tell that to young and dumb readers...so i guess things are edited

But butchering the names has proven to be a negative deterrant. Inu Yasha is doing good as well as Ruroni Kenshin, so there is no need for blatant disregard to the fans.

Detective Conan has been around for a while in Japan and has only recently been released to the US. It's name was butchered into Case Closed.

From what I can tell between the US and Japanese version, they only bungled up Officer Orcots title as Detective or something like that, otherwise the translation was right on.

MiXX went out of buisness and became Tokyo Pop, not too long after that the Sailor Moon TV show was rereleased in Uncut, unedited subtitled editions.

I liked that show :) although i will admit - i do perfer the english version to the ones with subtitles. I got wolf's rain the complete series but its subtitles and they are so horrible its almost funny. Its like someone else is doing the translating every few episodes or something. Good subtitles are a different story, but they still distract me so i guess i would perfer english dubbing instead.

I need say that the English version has even worse translations than the badly subbed episodes.

I thought Viz would be more professional with it's titles considering Del Rey, Tokyo Pop, CMP, CMX are doing a MUCH better job.

Yeah, Viz still sucks. Occassionally they have some okay people on their manga stuff, but their entire editorial philosophy has been f'd up since the get-go and they seem to have no intent of changing it for the most part (other than recognizing the demand gradually for unflipped manga, perhaps). I had hoped they had improved since I last worked on some of their stuff and learned just how messed up they really are first hand, but no, it's all still crap. I really hope Jump's publisher (Sueisha? Can't remember for sure right now) breaks off their deal with them later and leaves them with only Shogakukan titles to fend for themselves again. Yeah, I know Conan's a Shogakukan title, but still...

Mixx didn't die, it just changed INTO Tokyo Pop, first renaming and reformating the magazine, then the name of the publisher, which was probably for the better despite my initial misgivings. I didn't mind so much that they kept the names consistent with the DIC version of Sailor Moon back when it was still an issue, but their own revisions were horrible..."V-babe"? I mean WTF? Nowadays most of Tokyo Pop's publications are okay, except for some reason they almost always fuck with the (younger-oriented--or at least the ones they interpret to be such) shoujo titles in the same way, changing names, titles, and adding in street slang or such. It's like they feel like they need to dumb down stuff when publishing it for pre-teen girls. Their older-geared shoujo and jousei manga doesn't seem to get altered at least, for the most part.

Similarly I heard their adaptation of the manga and anime of Initial D got the same treatment, even replacing the music in Initial D with crappy US stuff--never mind the music in the show was one of its biggest selling points among fans (though I wonder if this was just they couldn't afford to license it with the original music). If it weren't for this kind of stuff, I'd place Tokyo Pop a lot higher on my list of manga publishers in the US.

I semi-disagree, Tokyo Mew Mew (which has retained then name while the anime is now Mew Mew Power and set in America WITH name changes) retains the names and the title, yes they did add lots of slang and such, but I don't think they changed a lot of the plot and they certainly didn't change all the SFX into English. I have heard that titles done by Giffen are ones to avoid completely however.
They probably feel like they do need to dumb it down, but it's certainly better than Viz editing EVERYTHING, names, SFX, and even the dialogue.

I did hear that Initial D was bad as well, I'm not sure if the DVD was done by TP, but I heard the manga had a bad editor. I think it might have been a liecnsing issue, since anime and manga are just to make money..so they aren't going to spend any more money than they have to.

Please tell me you place Tokyo Pop higher than Viz though. TP does rank down on my list as well, but Viz is D-E-A-D last.

did the orginals use Japanese slang and street terms? I mean that would be the hardest thing.

I was looking at (can spell her name's) "translateion desk draw" or whatever her page is called, and she had mention that Ruby (from Lunar Eternal Blue) had a song, and one line had somthing about "being cheif of the moutain", but that means nothing in our termonligy....I forget if she translated it to King of the hill or top dog. all in all it "means the same thing"

I first enounterd her and her page 4 or more years ago when I had a "magic weapon Nash" mp3 I wanted translating. she was game.
funist thing, at the time i didn't have winamp, I changed the extention to .mid and it worked 0_o.

I became the person with a 3 meg midi with vocals.

I;m a bit eased to find the PoH isn't botched, now you mention it Orcot's job is more of a cop than a Dective...i here that word...i think you know..Dick Tracy or somthing. I guess this one is is a bit exempt because of the setting and time. I find it intersting...somtimes I don't understand some of the "episodes". some make you feel weird.
